Located in North Carolina BRAVEYOUNG considers themselves down tempo but I usually have to mention bands like ISIS and pelican for people to know what I'm talking about, bands that I'm not crazy about and I feel that GIANT had their own path even then, and in their evolution have gone farther away from that to where when I describe them to someone, really heavy post-rock is what comes to mind. The first release by them was Song, a 5 song EP, which is very heavy but amazingly melodic, and includes screaming. After that they did a split with tides which is along the same lines as them genre wise, and the song they contributed showed where they were going in a sense but it still was similar to song. They then went into the studio to record a full length which was scrapped sadly but I trust they have good reason and Bloom was worth the wait. This was also around the time the name change arose, though they cite a record company forcing them to change the name I kind of feel like it was for the best because Bloom is a bit different and I'm patiently awaiting their full length because of how much I loved Bloom. I'm including their full discography so you can see where they came from and where they are now(Bloom has no vocals FYI) Also a fun fact about Bloom, it was recorded in a church live, which was an amazing choice because it intensifies what they're going for perfectly.

P.S. I have to say my favorite thing is in Upon The Boughs Which Shake Against The Cold when they go into the ambient section and the drums around 5:00 minutes and then it gets super epic and heavy, I go nuts every time I hear it, haha.

Also here is one of my favorite live videos of them of a song that I don't know if they'll ever release.

GIANT - Song and Split EP's

BRAVEYOUNG - Bloom

MYSPACE

EMPIRE! They are pretty much some of the coolest, most talented musician's I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Stemming out of Fenton, Michigan they are Keith, Cathy, Ahmad, and Jon. During their summer tour -which would inevitably lead to their new album release- I held a show for them in my Hagerstown garage back in August. It was bunch of good times, well other than the fact that I was suffering from mono-ish symptoms. Anyway! The show was great, other local bands such as The Usual,мища, and Eat People played along with them. We ended the day talking about Nintendo and eating my mums fresh baked brownies while my neighbors called the cops on us. They recently released their full length entitled What It Takes To Move Forward which, after their first ep in 2007 When The Sea Became A Giant, was an incredibly step forward (no pun intended). What It Takes is an accomplishment both in a lyrical sense and in a musical sense. It kind of reminds me of a roller coaster. It has aspects of their first demo which is incredibly more indie based; melodic and smooth; as well as that old midwest emo feel to the lyrics. What It Takes To Move Forward tells an incredibly story in every song that makes you feel very in touch with the members and their emotions.

I feel that Empire! Empire!(I was a lonely estate) is simply a must listen to band for anyone who enjoys good emo and the 90's. Definitely for fans of bands like, Street Smart Cyclist, <a href"www.myspace.com/snowingtheband">Snowing, and The Summer We Went West. They're also on an incredibly good label named Count Your Lucky Stars where you can purchase most of their albums! Hopefully I can get them to play around Hagerstown again this coming summer; so if you missed them last time you can get yourself another chance! Here's a video of them playing "Keep What You Have Built Up Here" from What It Takes To Move Forward in my garage:

Empire! I certainly do; the pure brutal break downs, the just barely discernible lyrics, the distorted to death guitars. Well I've found that once again! We all know what happened to just about all those bands I named - into the shitter, right? Well Octaves is just about everything you wanted from all those bands to keep on doing. I first head Octaves at the Talking Head in Baltimore about a month ago - ironically Baltimore, MD is actually where they are from. My first thought was that they were going to be some post-hardcore crap fast like drop dead gorgeous or something of the like. So I walked outside for some air and I heard this really familiar sound. I came back in when they were playing "I've Got A Box Full Of Pepe!" and was pleasantly surprised with the versatility of their music from then on out. I definitely urge you to give their demo a listen and check them out if they're ever playing near you. They're actually recording a full length right now in GA which should be done sometime in the next month or so; make you sure you check back in for that when I get it. Till then here's their demo and links to their myspace, etc.

Octaves - Demo (2009)

MYSPACEE

The Usual

The Usual is a band that hails from Hagerstown, MD. They're part of the large emo scene emerging from the depths of the Hagerstown area along with bands like мища, Vikings!, Perfect Future, and Anaria. These guys are all pretty young -juniors in high school- and have been playing music together since early 2007. They've had a number of releases but have not released anything that really shows their growth musically until recently. "We Missed A Season" is a 6 song ep/cd that they recorded recently in their friends basement. They're limited to 50 copies at 2 dollars a piece and can be obtained directly from the band at their myspace: The Usual. The album goes for a very fast upbeat punk sound that is sometimes even chaotic; with tracks that rarely last over two minutes. The track Mckoy is one that shows the bands diversity in sound with slow soft almost ambient picking that eventually leads up to their normal punk sound. Then there's Virginia Is Not A Fucking Commonwealth -which starts the album- which sort of gauges you for the rest of it and is a fantastic track. I think I'm pretty impressed with how the vocals turned out on this and how they were done. These guys deserve your support so give their album a listen from here and buy one from them!

The Usual-We Missed A Season (2009)

Heaven in Her Arms (Discography)

I have been pretty dormant for the last couple of weeks; finishing up classes and getting over sicknesses all at the same time-terrible combination!! Anyway this post has been loooooong overdue and since I recently obtained their new EP I figured now was as good a time as ever.
Heaven in Her Arms have got to be one of my favorite bands to date. I first heard them a couple of years ago thanks to Denovali Records and just fell in love with their raw asian screamo. These guys formed in 2005 and have been releasing new music just about every year since then. They've had a total of five releases and have worked with Ape Must Not Kill Ape and their own independent label, Liberation of Butterfly. Though these guys have gone through some interesting changes (as you will note if you listen to the albums) they have kept true to that Envy kind of feel. For example, in their most notable album; Erosion of the Black Speckle, they have a lot of Japanese monologues-which I can't understand-that build into a HUGE explosion of emotion and force. However, they do have plenty of tracks where it's just really nice instrumental breaks that draw you even deeper into their music.
Sometime around February they released their new EP in Japan, Duplex-Coated Obstruction which is a four songs that show just how far this bands come. It took me quite some time to get it but it was well worth the wait so I feel it's necessary to share with you guys.

Check out this sweet video from their Euro Tour in '07 with Daitro; they're playing Intersection Arrangement/Iron Wine and A Canary from their full length Erosion:

Heaven In Her Arms-Duplex-Coated Obstruction (2009)

Heaven in Her Arms-Erosion of the Black Speckle (2007)

Heaven In Her Arms-Ep (2006)

Heaven in Her Arms-Demo (2005)

Heaven in Her Arms Myspace
Heaven in Her Arms Last.fm

Isaiah

First post in awhile, college sure is keeping me busy. This evening I bring to you another great band from Belgium; these guys are named Isaiah and have been playing music together since early 2007. I first heard this guys about a year ago when I started listening to another great band from the exact same area(The Black Heart Rebellion-see earlier posts)and was blown away. They've recently gone through some changes vocalist wise but they're still playing with the same great melodromatic punk diy sound we all know and love(unless you're a goddamm commi!). Not to long after seeing Suis La Lune(US tour now! GO SEE THEM!)I thought about these guys(very similar but with a slightly rougher tone to them)and decided to check up on them. Sure enough that had recently been working on a new 12" which was scheduled to come out after their '09 tour. Luckily enough they had released to the internets for free so I went ahead and scooped it up. It's their first really large release and it's quite something if I do say so myself. Along with a s/t and a few splits and tour ep's, this release-''Ils consomment, tuent et prient mais ne pensent pas"-is simply sublime. They personally hail from Gaithersburg but, play all and around the Baltimore area. It's definitely hard to compare these guys(since they carry a lot of diversity in their sound)but if I was to have to, I'd say they remind me of a young L'antietam. This sound is more found in their new 7" that came out last year(which is attainable here:TIIIMMMBEERRRR)making it kinda newish but not really. They have two releases as of late; one demo(which is my favorite)and the 7" mentioned before released on something crucial records. I really think these guys will be putting out some great stuff in the future and if you're in the baltimore area definitely keep watch of them. Their myspace link is below along with their demo and a few selections from the 7".

Timber-Demo (2007)

Timber 7" (2008)

MYSPACE-Timber

The Black Heart Rebellion

Enter the Belgian hardcore scene. These guys have notably been described as a blend of the intense vocal power of Amanda Woodward and dark melodies of bands such as Mogwai, Isis, etc. Surfacing in 2004 they laid claim to hardcore when they made a, very rough, split with another Belgium band; Autumn Delay. Since then they have released three records both on vinyl and cd. One of these was a Japanese only release which is still obtainable through their MYSPACE(if your cool with paying for shipping from Japan to here hah). Next was the explosive Monologue(2008)release which, has been released on so many labels that if you can't get it its just sad(some examples:Smoke and Dust Records, Vlas Vegas Records). This album is an absolute trip in the full sense; like many other bands in their genre they use their music to create images and stories start to form and take shape. These sensations are also reflected in how they play music; visual effects and sounds. It is imagery at a beautiful dark peak. Check out monologue, I highly recommend it.

Here you can check out "Erase, Redraw Our Maps" live from the 4AD opening for Sun0))):

Split w/ Autumn Delay (2005)

Monologue (2008)

Hollow Jan

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_igvDCWvD0Jg/SWjvEPu4g7I/AAAAAAAAAB4/x2g9pXlBe2k/s400/hollow+jan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289740618568336306" />

Often called Hollow January this five piece band hails from Seoul, South Korea. I JUST discovered these guys and I have to say, obtaining their music has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. They have often been compared to other asian melodramatic hardcore bands such as early Envy and Heaven In Her Arms. When I first heard them I was astounded at the similarity between them and Envy(even more astounded that Korea had a hardcore scene) I immediately picked up their newest full length called "Rough Draft in Progress" which has got to be one of the most phenomenal albums to ever come out of asia; it can be purchased here I've Come For Your Children Records. So far they've had a total of 4 albums two of which are currently unavailable in the US. One of their ep's that is not available to the US is called "Hyacinthus Orietalis of Purple" but if you go to their Myspace you can get a little taste for it. Bellow I've included a live video of the title track of the ep; watch it to see what I mean by being similar to Envy! Their Rough Draft cd is also below for dl, though I do highly recommend you grab one for yourself if you like it.

Hyacinthus Orietalis of Purple (Live)

Rough Draft In Progress (2007)

To The North

To The North is a pretty great jazzy math rockish band from Brisbane, Australia. They really remind me of a band from Surrey named Meet Me In St Louis, who had the same mathy sound but retaining the punk feeling to their music; much like To The North. Even though they haven't been around all that long (2/07) they have had several releases which include, a cd/ep-still available from Yellow Ghost Records, and a new 7" split with Ohana; which I currently do not have. They're also going to be on the upcoming "Viva La Danza" compilation along with a number of wonderful punk/screamo bands (age sixteen, deers!, men as trees, Louis Cypehere, etc.) which should be kept track off on Zommerkamp Records. To The North also recently released a downloadable live set from a DIY fest in Australia-which I will include in this post-that includes a much different side of the band in which half the time you feel like your listening to a hardcore punk band that had sex with a jazz instrument. The cut rules and is about 23 minutes in length. They also have their own blogspot in which you can keep up to date on them and get lots of free SWAGG! I really dig their unique sound so check em out and lemme know what you think!

Landscapes CD/EP (2008)

To The North Live @ DIY Fest (2008)

TO THE NORTH BLOG

DEERS!

It's been quite some time but I'm back. This next band, DEERS!, is a hardcore screamo band straight out of Sacramento, California. These guys are super fresh man, the recordings I have of them are straight from their first demo which was created very recently. They've been active since early 2008 and are still going strong. Right now they're going on a winter tour in Cali but it's possibly they'll be releasing something more with Zomerkamp Records. These guys are chaos with a hint of melodic freshness that makes them one of my favorite punk/screamo bands right now. This 2008 demo they released in April is incredibly hard to come by and is absolutely excellent. This six song demo spanning about 14 minutes will have you swinging arms and screaming when you hear the effects and the vocals that these guys can belt out. Bands like Straight No Chaser and Malaysia's Kias Fansuri are incredibly similar and if you've ever listened to them, you'll like DEERS!.

DEERS DEMO 2008

These Arms Are Snakes & Russian Circles Split [Leak]

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and just assume you all know TAAS and Russian Circles by now. If not then here's the low down real fast. Russian Circles, three piece instrumental band from Chicago. They've been around since about 2004 and they have made quite a name for themselves in those few years. They've had 5 releases (including this one) and are always playing shows so look for them! These Arms Are Snakes are more experimental/post-rock/indie kinda stuff from Seattle. They have very unique vocals as well as very unique songs. These two decided to do a split while touring Europe together. I personally was quite taken aback from this seeing as how both these bands just released a new album not to long ago and the split has all new material. Still, it's a pretty good album and I've been waiting quite some time and copies are very limited, so have at it.

TAAS/RC Tour Split (2008)

RUSSIAN CIRCLES
THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES

Aussitôt Mort

Aussitôt Mort or "As Soon As Dead", is one hell of a a band from Caen, France. These guys started off in 2005 coming down on our faces with the amazing wave of French-Screamo that we all know and love so much. When asked about them I've been was told it's like, Gameness with a much more post-rock sound and guitars like Celeste. Can't complain with what I've heard in fact they've become one of my top bands over the past couple of months. What makes them worth my time, you may ask. Well one things for certain; any band who has gotten a hold of Pierre the bass player from Amanda Woodword is at least worth a listen.

These guys are currently on tour in Japan with Heaven in Her Arms (another fantastic screamo-hardcore band that I will make a note of to post sometime) and have just released a new LP entitled "Montuenga" that is some sick shit. Much more subdued compared to their older ep and demo it combines an Isis like sound with their already solid rifts and fantastic vocals. "Montuenga's" tracks are longer and have more sweet dialouges that would be even sweeter if I could understand French; It can be ordered from any of the sites I will include at the bottom of the page.

As great as these guys are it's pretty difficult to grab their stuff in America. So I decided to throw up the whole Aussitôt Discography on this post. I hope you all appreciate it cause it's one fine bunch of ep's, demo's, etc. Enjoy!

Monteunga (2008)

Buy:Level Plane Records

6 Songs (2007)

Demo (2006)

Balboa 7" Split (2006)

MYSPACE
Last.fm

Cowboys Became Folk Heroes

Let's start this train a rollin' with a band I just recently got into. Cowboys Became Folk Heroes is one of those bands that released a very small amount of material even though you know they could have done so much more. They're from FL and currently all living in different places, which would explain they lack of material at this time. They had about three total albums which where a demo, s/t, a rare cd/r called Hello Space Cowboy (which I am unable to find), and a release to Europe that was pretty much the same thing as the s/t just four tracks. These guys are just so fucking good, they have so many transitions in their music sometimes you're not sure whats going on. They have a Violent Breakfast, Daitro, and I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism In You Yearbook sound where it's very classic 90's emo infused with moments of melodic atmosphere. They include a very diverse instrumentation ranging from, pianos, violins, xylophones, they create and interestingly punk ambiance that just blows me away. Definitely worth checking out and if you'd like to get their stuff I implore you to check out Slave Union for their recent released 10" Discography which includes the Hello Space Cowboy.
